Kitchens Hertfordshire: A Victorian Townhouse In London Filled With International Design

An international mix of influences works on many levels on five floors home interior Brink expert Leila London

The dining room is dominated by a marble oval table Eero Saarinen chairs Hans Belmond.

School holidays Brink Leila spent growing up in the Netherlands were not exactly fun. With a father who was a painter and a mother who worked in a photo studio, which often trailed by museums or accompanied his father to the cemetery to read the inscriptions on the tombstones, he found fascinating.

And when they took the holiday, "was always a cultural break, never a beach one," recalls the 39-year-old mother of three children. "They were both very visual, very critical and very Dutch in that respect."

Although he complained at the time, Brink is now grateful for the way those early influences honed his appreciation for old and unusual, leading eventually she created Blue Gigi, an online business selling Moroccan rugs old.

The echoes of these influences can also be detected in the way Brink has decorated its five floors, Victorian 3000 square foot townhouse in north London, she shares with her husband Niels and his sons, Don, nine, Cassius, seven, and Pippa five. It has a sophisticated French Scandi aesthetics meets with the ingenious market finds and walls are filled with art, but is not a measure of simplicity of the Netherlands in the mix, too, that it becomes too fanciful.

It was not love at first sight when they saw the house. "He had 'made' by an interior designer who planned to paint the radiators salmon, light green windows and yellow walls," says Brink. "It's no surprise that ripped everything and start again."

They worked with Chris Eaton, an interior architect, to reconfigure the design so the kitchen on the ground floor, where they spent most of their time, could be moved to a bigger, brighter area in Part front of the house. Hidden behind it are a dining room and a TV room, which opens onto the garden.

Brink has filled the house with a mix of contemporary furniture mid-century and come from the 1stdibs website, the concept store in west London Mint and section vintage Designers Guild. "I wish I could say that I had dug in barns or bargains in car sales start are, but having two children and running a business, I have no time to crawl through the markets, so just bought a lot from vintage boutiques.”

Selling carpets also feature throughout the house - a mix of traditional designs Ouarain Beni, with its distinctive stack thickness and geometric patterns and colors boucherouites made of a patchwork of vintage textiles reused as djellabas.

The double room is the most striking part of the house, thanks largely to Lucy Bathurst linen blinds covering the window (the smarter alternative possible curtains) and sliding doors made of old lab tables School Retrouvius . "You can still see the bad words carved on desks, but I guess it adds character," Brink says with a smile.

Such is Brink's eye for detail commented that when the fireplace is very old, tells me that this is a man who makes fireplaces reproduction antique look. "He's very eccentric, and it will you find on the Internet. He came here on his overalls Ferrari and needed to be alone for the day so he could concentrate. You will not even allowed into the room for you do not mind."

Brink could sympathize. As a girl who was infinitely rearranging your room, a habit she admits she has never grown out of - his favorite way to relax when you have a rare moment for herself it is to shuffle the furniture around. "It can give you a new perspective on a place, and that's infinitely satisfying."

Pro Secrets For Painting Kitchen Cabinets

Professional Painter John Dee shows how to give good dark closets glossy, cabinets’ factory finish without ordering new doors

If your kitchen cabinets are solid but dated and dark, a new coat of paint can go a long way toward transforming the space without emptying your bank account. You can hire a professional to spray-paint for or over a thousand dollars, but there is a less expensive, and less messy alternative to consider: Use a brush and paint the cabinets yourself.

"It is not necessary to spray for a smooth finish," says the painting contractor John Dee, who has worked on several television projects This Old House. Often brush paints cabinets anyway, because it gives you more control and avoid the risk of spray paint to finish where he did not want. (Surface preparation is the same if you spray or brush.) Brushing is a long time, he warns, and could take up to a couple of weeks to complete. But the result is a durable finish, soft glass is the equal of anything from a spray gun. "You just use the best materials and taking the time to sand and brush do well," says Dee.

Before starting a paint job the kitchen cupboards and empty the counters clear and remove the independent apparatus. Tables and other furniture relocate to another room. Rosin paper tape on the counters and floors, and sheets of plastic tape on the back wall, windows, fixtures and interior doors (to protect the rest of the house dust and fumes). Mask the wall around the cabinets. Finally, establish a working group to paint the doors, drawers and shelves.

Pro Tip: In kitchens the key to a good paint job is the preparation of the surface. "Old cabinets are covered with everything from hand oils greasy smoke residue frozen sauce," says Dee. "You have to get everything out or painting does not remain."

Kitchens Newcastle Interiors... Your Kitchen Rules

Ex car designers have taken to sculpt the hub of family life

Kitchen Porter and Jones - more iron, graphite, copper, brass and natural stone will be the trend in recent designs.

Major decisions are carried out in the kitchen. It's where the kitchen occurs, but it is often the boardroom of the family too. When problems occur, the kitchen is the place where they are corrected.

Is more informal than the living room and less territorial Room. And it provides a captive audience.

If you want to talk to someone about an uncomfortable subject, wait until they are cutting vegetables. You'll have at least half its staff, is unlikely to go down, and you will not have to look in the eyes. In fact, they are easy to whatever you want to talk white.

Just be careful of sharp knives.

When the kitchen design focuses on ergonomics alone, sometimes misses the mark. I have seen magnificent open kitchens with all appliances in the catalog, and have known instinctively that he would not be able to relax in them. Maybe it's just me, but I cannot tell people my problems when I'm surrounded by high gloss finishes.

And I cannot imagine trusting someone in a room full of edges and right angles. My kitchen is not just a workstation - is also a confessional.

Any kitchen designer worth his salt will take this into account.

"You have to be good at dealing with people. A lot of the time you are listening to what they say as much as what they say," says Lisa Johnston of Johnston Cillian Studio.

"The kitchens are very personal. For me, the feeling of space is paramount. If you have ten presses, can fill them all. If you only have one you will learn to handle that. But we must be able to enter a kitchen and think -. Here is a space where I can operate Aesthetics are a consequence of that ".

She finds that the Irish can be cautious about their kitchens, often fleeing adventurous designs. "We all have a conception of what a kitchen, and generally we grew up with," she says.

"Most of the Irish want to move a leap forward with design, but not ten falls. We need that connection with the past."

From a kitchen is a big investment, it is probably wise to be conservative. And the more you spend, the more time is likely to last. A kitchen Cillian Johnston Studio will cost at least € 15,000, but for that you get a fully handmade in which each element.

"We do everything ourselves," Johnston says. "If we say we do a drawer we actually do from scratch tailored is that means that all elements are elastic modularity No -.... That means there is no restriction"

If you buy a kitchen entry level, probably it is a company that offers modular units, put together to get closer to what you want approximation. There will be limitations, but that will be reflected in the cost. 2015 Ikea catalog, for example, shows kitchens between € 1,000 and € 3,000. Even when you added the cost of bringing home the planes packages, and around € 1,300 to be fitted kitchen, still pretty cheap.

The argument against buying entry level kitchens is that they do not last, but it depends on what you mean by duration. Our own kitchen cost around € 2,000 to buy and 1,000 € to install about seven years ago. It looked great for the first five years. Now it's getting a little old, but I think we can jolly along for a while.

Kitchen Porter & Jones Dublin start at about € 20,000. The company is the Irish agent for Snaidero, an Italian brand known for expensive, minimal, contemporary kitchens. But even if you cannot afford to buy in this end of the market, worth taking a look at what is happening in the forefront of technology and style.

Since many of Snaidero designers have worked on the car industry, it is not surprising that some of their kitchens have the type of finish you would expect in an expensive car.

"As for the finish, I think we will be seeing more matte finishes," says Liza Porter Jones & Jones. "Snaidero have introduced a compound of mica in a range of lacquers which gives them a pearly shine."

Marble is still the most popular work surface, for those who can afford it, but the highly polished black marble from the boom years ago has given way to pale gray and white with subtle veining. "The whiter the most expensive!" says Jones.

Top Interior Design Trends For 2015

The Dean Hotel in Dublin has all the latest trends, including changing blue walls, in a nutshell.

are you planning to redecorate your home this year? If so, you'll be looking interior design tips and inspiration. Here we ask the experts for their top trends for 2015.

Warm colors

the consensus among designers is that rust and blue will be great this year. There will be nothing cheerful and boating on the use of the blue, however. This is blue changing. The Dean Hotel, a new fashion hotel Dublin, interior designer Mhairi Coyle says it "makes all things new in a nutshell", has used this tone to contrast with white ceilings.

Joe Burns, co-founder of super prime interior designer and developer Oliver Burns, think blue will continue to evolve, "becoming a warmer color, making it more acceptable as neutral, especially when combined with green and exotic yellow”.

The main color expert Pantone Color for 2015 is Marsala, a red-brown earthy, or oxide, a shadow described as "abundant, yet elegant tone." Named after the Italian wine, is a neutral tone that will appeal to men and women. There is some support for green too. Dara Huang, director of Design Haus Liberty, is favoring this color.

The return of traditional bathroom

Bathrooms are outdated fashion - or rather, they are no longer fashionable. You can get contemporary bathrooms around the world, which may be why some people are returning to the vintage look. The bathroom of the Victorian era, with separate foot tub, wallpaper, wood panels or tiles on the wall, and a carpet mat on the floor, is the ideal.

Burns said: "We have begun to see the elements of traditional bathroom sneak back into the interior."

The kitchen as the new hall

most new home constructions have a kitchen-dining room open plan, so it makes sense to make the kitchen look more like a living space, otherwise it may seem like you are camping in the kitchen.

Designer Sophie Ashby says: "People (are) away from the gaze 'bright picture' and more towards a kitchen with character and personality, shown through very unique, such as unusual wood materials, metal siding and marble statement. “Even taps will get more attention, he says, with a preference for black matte bronze and brass.

Wood paneling

Are your walls are bland? Then wood panels - another key trend - could be the answer. After all, the Georgians, who were experts in wood paneling or wainscoting, knew how to make an elegant home. The real stuff is expensive so if you are on a budget you have two options: buy reclaimed panels or create your own. Create two by four squares using wooden boards and paint the wood and walls. You can also try the tongue and groove ceiling.

Malachite

Malachite seems to be the new marble. This semiprecious stone is commonly used in jewelry and for decorative boxes. Its appeal lies in its color - a rich emerald green - and their employers - swirling bands of light and dark tones.

Burns says, "not only offers an intense color interior follows from the deep blue we've seen this year, also has a wonderful, organic impression."

Bronze

Want to make your kitchen look less sterile? Enter some hot metal. Coyle said: "tops covered copper, although it is a nightmare to keep looking bright, looks great." For a more understated look, go for bronze. You could add smaller details such as hinges and handles, or kitchen faucets.

The Mosque Kitchen

The Mosque Kitchen is an institution in Edinburgh. Ask anyone who was once a student broke in this magnificent city and be able to tell that in the end, how wonderful the food is here and how reasonably priced it is.

Now, I'm sad to say it’s been a few years since I've been a student, but I still like to pay this place a visit once in a while I get the craving for curry cheap solution, but tasty.

The main mosque cuisine is on the corner of Plaza Nicolson, however this place really started to turn in the King Fahd Mosque in Potterrow. The story goes that the kitchen used to serve chicken and rice at reasonable prices to customers after Friday prayers, however after 9/11 the manager decided to open the restaurant to everyone, regardless of religious belief, to show Islam "was not terror".

The word of his tasty food and reasonable prices soon spread, and his popularity soared. It expanded to premises on the main road but you can still find the original kitchen around the corner if you want to have lunch at the mosque itself.

Normally just go to the restaurant on the corner which is still owned by the same people and serves the same delicious scran. The interior features a bright interior, but simple, and you have to go to the bar in the back for his food - no table service here. But for the price, you cannot complain.

As you go up, you will see that all the food is out and ready to go is. All you have to do is tell the server the dish you want, will slop on a paper plate for you and go. Being a creature of habit, I always go for the vegetable curry. At 3.50 pounds, it's the cheapest meal on the menu, but it's a generous portion and absolutely delicious.

Mr. Bug normally goes for chana masala (chickpea curry) but the last time we went he got the chicken curry, which he was equally tasty. It's a little more expensive, but at 4.50 pounds, is hardly going to break the bank.

So if you are in Edinburgh and a bit of a budget, then the mosque kitchen is definitely a good shout for a meal. It's a luxury experience, but the food is excellent and unlike many restaurants in Edinburgh, you will not leave with a portfolio of mourn.

Kitchen Interiors: 4 Hot Tech Trends For Bath And Kitchen

Interior Designer Tells Us What's New In The World Of Kitchens And Bathrooms.

Forget about keeping up with the neighbors, such rapid innovation happening in the kitchen and bath technology, we are almost surpassing the Jetsons. In this new world of sintered particles and controls wireless light is easy to feel out of the loop, so we caught up with founder's design to get the scoop on where technology is going in 2015. Thanks to him,’re washing away any uncertainty about technological trends away ... using our new touch-less faucet brand, of course.

State of the Art Gets style

Praised for its warm, West Coast aesthetic, which uses reclaimed wood and varied textures, Banfield's work does not fit immediately with the stereotypical image of cold high-tech design function first. But these days, manufacturers ensure that high-tech options are as elegant as useful. Take Moxie Kohler shower, Banfield has in his own bathroom. With its integrated wireless speaker, you may expect the Moxie look bulky, but as Banfield says, "Is not seen as a speaker, it looks like a shower, and looks very smart." In fact, the Moxie comes in a lot of "bold fashion colors" -from chartreuse cherry red. Similarly, Moen offers hands-free faucets in styles that will please traditionalists and modernists alike: finishes ranging from smooth oiled bronze and polished chrome.

It is the day spa every day

"We are seeing a push for more spa-style bathrooms bigger," says Banfield. "We can make it more of an experience than just a place for washing, brushing teeth, and leave." Thinking of adding a little luxury to your life? Install Nuheat mats under tile shower, then store to heat just in time for your morning routine. At the top, lights Hue Philips can help you create the perfect environment for some R and R: a single bulb provides light in all colors of the spectrum. Forgiving? Claro. But Banfield says: "There are positive making that spa-like atmosphere for people who deal with health problems, whether mental or physical."

Hold The Phone

Forget the remotes. When it comes to the newest technology, the smartphone is all you need. "The technology application is doing many gadgets as customizable" Banfield said. Philips Lighting Hue, for example, can be programmed to color in a photo that you upload to your phone. If you like entertainment, check out the range of LG Smart Thinq. You can adjust the oven temperature through your phone, meaning you never have to leave their half of the conversation back dinner guests.

Timeless Technology

A perceived problem with technology-ing out your kitchen or bathroom, it may seem a more unequal something new investment is always just around the corner. But many of the high-tech options today are becoming fewer and timeless fashion. Case in point: brand Dekton Cosentino countertops. Technology-sintered particles that mimics natural metamorphic changes-results in a super slim stone countertop is nonporous, even unsealed. Banfield are installing the first of its kind in gorgeous colors BC-but given Dekton and unique advantages, we feel it will be more of these facilities in the future.

5 Kitchen Looks Expected To Be Big In 2015

He has been playing with the idea of renovating your kitchen and think 2015 could be the perfect time to take the plunge? Before you start searching for a professional to tackle the project, it is important to think about what you need and how you can improve your cooking settings and what you want the room to look like. Also worth reading on emerging trends in the kitchen, which can provide a spark of inspiration and, ultimately, influence the design of its new cooking area.

Although we cannot write his dream wish list for you kitchen, we can help out with a list of design elements that are increasing. We recently caught up with three designers who shared their short-lists of kitchen design ideas you think will be the biggest trends of 2015.

1. The characteristics of design style furniture. Interior designer Greg Natale predicts furniture style cabinets and other features will be a major trend in 2015. This approach represents another step in the evolution of the kitchen as the center of the house and a place treasured whole family you can enjoy rather than just a functional area used for food preparation and cooking alone. "The incredible designs available celebrate the different elements of the kitchen as beautiful pieces of furniture, not only workstations, which allows people to bring their own, personal touch warm welcome to this space," he says.

2. Airy (and easy to use), open shelving. "We are seeing a trend towards the use of open shelves as a practical solution for the kitchen space, rather than simply for display," says Sydney designer kitchen Kesha Pillay Art Kitchen. "Open shelves personalize the space, making it feel lived in and warm, while functional and easy to use kitchen is maintained."

3. Wallpaper mesmerizing. Want to add interest and character to your cooking area? Incorporating wallpaper - will be an important trend in 2015, according to kitchen and bath designer Lee Hardcastle - in the design of your kitchen is the perfect solution. "Wallpaper provides an easy way to add visual impact, even in small quantities," says Hardcastle. "Wallpaper gives control to complement the architectural elements throughout the kitchen or adding a beautiful contrast with a color palette otherwise simple."

4. Classic style. The designs marry modern and traditional elements, will be one of the most influential looks of 2015, according to Pillay, who says that the owners are avoiding ultrasleek, contemporary kitchens for spaces that are "warm, welcoming and reflect themselves same. "

"This trend is affecting everything from the design of cabinet colors, textures materials. We are really mixing it up," she says. "The doors of the cabinet-screen TVs are being replaced with classic profiles for doors, gates and Shaker" for example. And the materials are mixing, such as stainless steel, wood, marble and wood.

5. Ceilings that make you look up. Next year ceilings decisions statement says Hardcastle, who designed the amazing cuisine seen here. "For a long time, we have all forgotten to look up. More emphasis will be on the roof design, in terms of form, features, etc.," he says. "Whether through the use of lighting, coffered ceilings and bulkheads, or the addition of classical motifs, our roofs become part of the beauty of the room again."

I'm not sure how to take your design kitchen ceiling to new heights? Look into space here for inspiration. The design feature wood framing via the kitchen and runs from one side of the island at the edge of the cabinets on the opposite wall instantly attracts the eye upward, like the row of clerestory windows which creates the illusion a floating roof.
